How Did Lancaster, California Come To Be?

Lancaster, California was founded in the late 1800s as a railroad town. The Southern Pacific Railroad had arrived from Los Angeles and needed a refueling station for their steam locomotives. Lancaster offered an ideal location, as it was situated near abundant supplies of fuel from nearby mining operations, as well as being within easy access of the growing population of settlers in the region.

The first families to settle in Lancaster were mostly ranchers who used the area’s dry climate and open range land to develop cattle herds. As more people began to move into the area, businesses sprang up along the railroad tracks to provide services and commerce to this new community. A post office opened in 1891, officially establishing Lancaster with its own zip code.

By the 1930s, Lancaster had become a thriving hub of activity, serving as a major trade center for farmers and ranchers in the region. The area’s agricultural production included cotton, alfalfa, citrus fruits, barley and various other crops. The city also became home to several manufacturing companies that supplied goods to nearby military bases and urban areas throughout southern California.
