How Did Simi Valley, California Come To Be?

Simi Valley's history dates back to 1795 when Spanish explorers first discovered it. In 1887, Robert Poindexter purchased much of the land in what is now Simi Valley and established Rancho Simi. The area was used primarily for growing barley, oat hay and later lima beans. By the 1890s, development had begun with several farmers settling in the region including Thomas Ellis who planted rice fields along Arroyo Simi and named the area “Simiopolis.”

In 1910, the Santa Susana Railroad connected Simi Valley to Los Angeles and by 1911 a post office had been established. The population of the area continued to grow with more stores, churches, schools and businesses being built in the 1920s. By 1930, it was declared an official city and soon after became home to its first industry - The Douglas Aircraft Company which opened a plant that produced planes during World War II.

The 1950s brought rapid growth as well as development of residential neighborhoods in Simi Valley. In 1967, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library was dedicated in Simi Valley as well because President Reagan resided in nearby Agoura Hills for many years. The city saw a large population surge during the 1970s and 80s due to its close proximity to Los Angeles and affordable housing prices.

Today, Simi Valley continues to be one of Ventura County’s most desirable cities with an array of activities, attractions and amenities. It is home to world-class educational institutions, top businesses and recreational opportunities such as hiking trails, parks and golf courses.  Simi Valley also boasts a thriving arts scene with galleries, theaters, museums as well as festivals throughout the year.  With so much to offer residents and visitors alike, it’s no wonder why Simi Valley has become such a popular destination over the years!
